Just did this on mine (2016), both had failed but was in fact due to corrosion on the terminals on the car side. All you need to do is pop out the led lens out using a flat screwdriver and either replace the whole unit (led is attached to the lens) or use a small file to clean up the terminals.

why not replace just the lower ball joint, they press in and out. They are however pricey and might not be economical on a non ABC car. Ive done a couple myself due to the same noise you are talking about.
