c180 ball joint tool

Hi I need to replace the lower suspension ball joints on my 1994 C180 front suspension. I bought a ball joint separator tool (wedge type) but I now find the slot will not fit over the taper shaft on the new joint. What tool do you use to separate the joints? The shaft is turning in the mount...
