I keep looking at this advert and can't see £1,500 anywhere, apart from this bit: -

The rest of it seems to mention £150, or have I gone wrong somewhere?

£150 is probably there to get the price of advertising down as its much cheaper IIRC if the vehicle is below £1500

Agree Dave, 150 is mentioned twice and 1500 only once so I would say that the 1500 is a typo

Hi Howard, you asked where I am going with this thread. All I want to know is how the W220 in the advert which is in absolute tatters is worth more than mine which isn't in tatters??? :???:

I suppose the fact that your prop shaft is actually still connected to the car must go some way.

As I said , a body shop will fix that up in their spare time and make some beer money.

A base model w140 with an engine fault is a different kettle of fish. Very few people want them even when they are working properly. Sorry but that's just the way it is.

Take it to we buy any car , they may not notice the boot lid dent and you'll be rid of it , it's like a millstone round your neck. You get more and more bitter with every post.

Or bite the bullet and drive it into the sea. Just get rid of it and you'll be happy. I promise.

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
So if I advertise my old heap of ****e for £4000 does that make your old car worth more money?? - NO

Just cos someone else is daft enough to want far too much for a car doesn't mean anyone will pay it.

You were offered good money for yours - TAKE IT FOR GODS SAKE.

I took £250 for a 54 plate galaxy that drove really well - why? Well because it failed MOT cos the airbag was on, and it was cheaper to scrap it than fix it - and that car had hundreds of bits found on hundreds of other Galaxy's driving round so worth good money to the scrapper.

Yours is an old car, it's in a right state and it doesn't drive properly. Your MOT is eeking away and it might not pass next time - so get out of it now and save yourself.

Move on!

My 1998 CL420 140 is not in good enough condition to ask more than £1500, yes everything works and it runs well, no dents or rust.

When the time comes, I would probably be happy to give you that for it Malcolm, based on seeing it once, and your regular reports of happiness with it. Plus, you never have to buy a new soft top for a CL :)

Don't keep posting negativity towards me. Ok?

OK, I understand it's hard to deal with the truth when it's pointed out to you, then view it as negativity.

But it seems I not alone on this.

reread the posts, the same advice is given time after time, get rid, move on.

Something is worth what someone will pay for it.

NOT what they promise to pay next week, when they get the money.
NOT what something else the same was worth a second ago.
NOT what we want to think it is worth.
NOT what we might need to get back for it.
NOT what anyone says.
NOT whatever you think.

BUT ONLY WHAT SOMEONE WILL ACTUALLY PUT IN YOUR HAND.

Beyond that, the clever, resourceful, persuasive, informed and determined individual will get the best price.

I think turbopete is correct on this one... it is very common on AT now. Vehicles are advertised say at £495 and the first line of the ad says 'Price is £4950' or 'Guide price £495, selling at auction' or words to that effect.

Very annoying as they possibly pay more fees but also it brings their listing to the first search page

Since I've recently sold a car on Autotrader I can confirm if your listing is under £1000 you pay less than half the fees - and the fees aren't cheap.

For basic it's £37 for 2 weeks with a price of over £1000 - for under £1000 that drops to £15.

I think you should keep the car and work your way through sorting the problems via the forum. I'm sure you'll get there eventually with everyones help and keep the forum active;)

I'd just put it on eBay, start it at £250 and see if you get any more...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-MERC...2528693?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item35ddaf6f35

This is an example which has actually sold, not what someone is hoping to get for it. It's in similar condition to yours so perhaps you'll get a little more than £250..

This. Start it at 250 no reserve. Put lots of good pictures that show the car honestly (i.e. include one of the damaged boot). Write a description in the same style as above, keeping it factual and honest (NOT in the style you use on here when describing cars!). When someone comes to collect it dont try to haggle or back out and take the money with a smile, even if it´s low.

You might get 300, you might get 700 if lucky. it´s your best shot and far better than posting up adverts of other cars that don´t work which have absolutely nothing to do with your car

For the sake of £22 why be dishonest? I dont get some people.
