Hello chaps,

I've posted about this topic before, but can't seem to find it now.

In short, in the next 4 weeks I will be buying a second car. It has to have the following:

1. Be a MB!
2. Automatic transmission
3. Good mpg (for town use)
4. Competitive insurance, London based car parked on the street
4a. Compact in size
5. As new as possible... low miles.

What MBs are available for the £5k mark?

With best.

Thanks. Is the W204 chassis notably better? I'd have thought my £5k could stretch to something a little newer than 2007.

Probably but mileage will shoot up, if you search on AT there are no W204 for that kind of money with less than 100k on.

I used the following:

Mercedes
Mileage up to 50k
Price £4500 - 5500
Gearbox - auto

To get 2007 on car you are looking at an A or B Class

W204 with 125k on the clock £5500

W204 with 200k on the clock for £5k

Thanks @JBell... should I be worried about the 5+ owners?

I guess the 220 diesel engine is the one to go for... it seems the most popular.

What is servicing like? Costs I mean?
I have a good independent who looks after my S124, so that is not an issue.

Around town there is not a noticeable difference in fuel efficiency between 4 and 6 pots on the engine.

Really?? On the 124 chassis it makes a BIG difference, I would not dream of running the 280 or 320 in Central London unless fuelling is not an issue. My 200 is pretty good...

Average MPG, I record on RoadTrip app:

E220 (65 plate, 10500 miles on the clock) 35.28 combined; around town 30-31mpg.
E320 (07 plate, 212000 on the clock) 31.38 combined; around town 28-29mpg.

Diesel in central London is probably going to be hit with an extra congestion charge sooner rather than later.

Black cabs will be exempt as will buses, bin wagons, anything municipal or public transport basically. And tourism.

Ships are some of the worst offenders, London is about to build a cruise ship terminal:

"The programme starts off looking at plans to create a new cruise passenger terminal in Greenwhich (sic) and then (nine minutes in) moves to Southampton – named in 2014 by the World Health Organisation as one of the most air polluted cities in the UK."

BBC Radio 4 Costing The Earth - iPlayer - mp3

This is coming to cities all over the UK

Cruise ships make about 0.3 ton per mile at cruising speed... and that is burning marine distillate too, not diesel as we would know it.

Air travel is a big contributor to air pollution as well though isn't it ?
