Please tell me I’m not alone when I say the M111 range of engines sounds different than nearly all mainstream N.A. petrol cars of that era and even until now?

Admittedly the 6cyls are smoother and sound better, but the 4cyls also sounds good. It’s find a bit like a Harley Davidson kind of rumble.
As apposed to the kind of hairdryer whirry sound most other petrol cars have.

I’ve only recently found out that the engine is configured ‘oversquare’ do you think that could be the reason behind the unique Mercedes sound?

Its most likely a function of exhaust design and engine mountings.
Over square designs are very common.

I have found that older MB's (M112 etc) seem to have an odd buzz to their exhaust note as well!
