hi,

I can find no fault in the front end of my 01 S600. Yet for the past 40,000 miles I have gotten this clunking sounds as if something shifts for a split second when I turn the wheel while the car is at a standstill or driving at very low speed = high friction between tires and road surface. I also feel the clunk in the steering wheel when it happens. Occasionally, it can also be reproduced when going over a pothole in the road. It MAY be originating on the driver's side. There is no vibration, pull or leaks from the front end when driving. We can find no worn from end components. We have considered the front adjustable shocks but found nothing there either.

Could it not be the actual steering rack itself? Failing that I'd say a drop link rose joint

Could it be the bottom swivel filled with rust, you have to lever them always to check

I have the same thing happening on the osf of my E55. Colin at MBS tried all his levers and there is no movement anywhere. It resembles the sound of the pads moving within the caliper. A sort of clunk that can be felt through the steering column at very low speed when braking.

I would be interested in the outcome also.

Its worse when im changing direction, reverse to drive, driving in and out of a parking space for example.

I thought it may be a ball joint, but I had that done previously and the others are OK.

I do intend to take it back to MBS at some point as it does annoy me knowing it isn't right.
My noise only happens on low speed braking:confused:

I have read somebody describing something similar and they adjusted the play in the rack and the problem was sorted!

I had a clunk sound/feel a few months back if I applied hard lock while reversing. Checked the PS fluid level and found it very low. Filled it up to correct level (took 0.3 litre!) and problem went away.

Thought I might have a leak in the PS but it's been fine since. No idea why the fluid disappeared nor where it went. It was definitely at the correct level previously.

I just checked my PS fluid as that would be a nice easy fix! On the top mark though :(
