Hi all,
just after a bit of advice. My 04 E Class requires new front discs and pads, the independent I use has quoted me £350. I'm quite handy with the spanners and would prefer to do this work myself. Is there any Haynes type manuals out there for my car? Can anyone recommend a good supplier of MB parts and has anyone on here carried out these works (the only thing I am worried about is the SBC pressure system thingy thats on my E class)

Thanks in advance

Just disconnect the batteries if you have 2,, push the pedal down 20 times and the car is like a normal one. I have SBC and thats the way that I do mine and many others have too.

That pads and disc on your car are just normal,,if you want any help just ask.

I use EBC pads to keep the wheels cleaner, and have used them for the last 6 years.

If you have a local motor factor, ask them if they can get Zimmerman disc,,they are OE to MB and I saved £200 by using them on my SL

Cheers Malcolm, what colour/grade of EBC pad do you use/recommend for my 270 E? Also, are there any other consumables involved ie disc bolts?

When I reconnect my battery, what will need recoding/rebooting(apart from the radio)? Or can I pull a fuse from the SBC instead?

Thanks

Just a quick re set, thats windows and roof,,just close the window and hold the switch up for 10 sec on closing with the Key in 2 do the same for all 4 windows and roof, turn the steering from lock to lock 3 times to turn off the ESP lamp and thats it 2 mins max and safe

Radios from 2000 should not need coding but not guaranteed

I used the Green pad this time, but next time I will use RED Ceramic pads, they have a nice bite.

If the sensors wires are twin wires then replace them, no screws or bolts need, you may need to take off the callipers on the rear depending on what make are fitted, if so I can give you the torque figure

Job completed today

Finally got round to changing the discs and pads today, all went without hitch and took less than 2 hours. Only thing not working after my initial reset is the sunroof but will have a look at that tomorrow. Brief cost breakdown;

Brembo discs and (can't remember manufacturer!) pads from German, French & Swedish; £132

Quoted £350 from local indie (who I use for servicing). Good days work!!

Thanks for all the advice

brake pads/discs

I have read many times of forum members changing the above and have never understood why some of the time....My 53 reg E211 has done 51,000 miles and still has the original set of brakes...on the last service 4,000 miles ago before it went in,i removed all wheels and measured both pad thickness, and the lip on the disc for curiosity(and to make sure something was not done ....mainly me.....that didn't want doing) pad t/ness was between 9-10 mm....the lip on the discs (with an old feeler gauge) about 10 thou,no pitting, scores etc....quite pleased with this as the last time i changed discs was on a capri about 35 years ago.....I mentioned this to the service team at MB/Chesterfield when taken in for test last month..(cost £35 not bad eh)to be told iv'e a long way to go as the best so far is 100,000 m....could it be down to standard of driving? the amount of vehicles iv'e followed rushing to get up backside of one in front then braking is unbelieveable, but then again i am a steady driver,;).......the advice given is very helpfull tho'and glad iv'e seen it........nice to see yer back malcolm got a bit of a problem with car phone, probably be asking for a bit af advice meself shortly;)..paul..

Mine were reported at 10% worn at 35K miles, but I pretty well only use the car for the occasional long motorway journey. I regard it as a failure on the motorway if I have to press the brake pedal.

Consequence of lack of use is that disks go very rusty, and at the last MOT (and the one before) they noted the disks were pitted. They said this time they would have changed them (car is on ServicePlus) but the pads looked quite new! When I told them they were the originals they seemed dismayed they'd missed the chance to change them and offered to pick the car up next day. I told them not to bother and I thought they were going to cry!

I am very much in the same camp as Rory here. I don't dawdle, but keep a decent distance on all roads (2 second rule). On my last work car (W211) I did 63,000 miles with no change of pads and my previous car was a Volvo S80 auto (pad change at 70,000). I have never fitted new discs to a car, but have only been driving since 1965.

Clearly the type of use matters (urban v rural v motorway) but the style of driving does make a big difference on consummables (fuel, tyres, brakes) and therefore helps keep costs down. It seems to have little or no effect on overall journey time. :):)

Brake pads/disks

My 2002 C220 cdi manual had the front disks and pads changed at 75,000 miles, then the pads only at 155,000 miles. Disks were unworn, but warped.

The rear disks and pads were changed at 135,000 miles. Disks were corroded, but not worn.

I have driven it since new.

All replacement disks/pads have been ATE from Eurocarparts.

I just had front & back discs replaced by my local MB dealer.

Cost? Very reasonable considering the size.....

£72 each for front
£68 each for back

No pads (brand new) + VAT and fitting.
