Dear all,

I am new to the forum. I bought my first merc in September 2008. it was a MB franchise car which had done 74K on the clock, full MB service history. It had been driving smoothly until the engine management light came on in December 2008. i took the car to MB Bromley where they diagnosed that the diesel particulate filter needed changing and this would cost over a £1000 to fix since my warranty had run out in May 2008.

Ever since, the car has been driving ok (without fixing the first problem), with the occasional problems on the motorway where it took too long to change down when going uphill which i thought would be likely for automatic engines. Is this the case??

Last Monday, I booked the car in with MB Stratford (London) for a service B and for them to fix the first fault (diesel particulate filter). The work will be carried out on Thursday 26th Feb, which is likely to cost approx. £1500. I was also informed about a recall on the turbo... not sure what this means.

To cut a long story short, while driving the car today, I experienced loss of power while driving at 30mph. This has never happened before. After a few seconds, I turned the engine on and everything was ok.

Question is: Is the sudden loss of power problem related to the first diagnosis about the diesel particulate filter.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Di

Did you have the DPF replaced? If not it is possible that the engine was about to utilise the DPF and as it wasnt working, ie was showing a fault.. then was unable to perform the cleansing operation and went into limp mode. Also some of these cars were recalled to have a sensor replaced to combat this problem..

Thanks for the quick response Xtractorfan. The DPF will be replaced this coming Thursday. If MB had recalled some of the cars to have sensors replaced, i will try and ask the warranty department for a discount. Not sure whether it is still safe for me to drive the car to work until MB resolves the problem.

Hello and welcome.

Some hard question here,,is the turbo faulty and oil is getting onto the MAF, may things here. I understood the the DPF was good for over 150k miles.

One thing is though I do not think that you will Damage anything between now and Thursday.

I do not think the Bromley have a very good name

Hi Malcolm,

I am not sure whether the turbo is faulty. I am guessing if there is a recall on it, then it must be faulty. This was the advice i got from MB Stratford following the service booking. I will ring and find out in the morning. Thanks for the information on the DPF and about MB Bromley. Is MB Stratford any good? Anyone in/near south east london you can recommend?
Kind regards

Hi Malcolm. Just spoken to MB Stratford about the turbo. There has been a recall on the link pipe to the turbo and MB are happy to check and fix this free of charge. It has affected other models hence the need to check and make sure the one on my vehicle was in good working order. Why did you think oil was getting onto the MAF?

Oil could leak from a faulty turbo, that was all, and yes the charge pipe is well known
