Hi all, well my 15 year old C250TD is rapidly coming to the end of it's life, so it's time to replace.... I am looking at (roughly) a 10 year old C220 or E320, I wonder if anyone has any advice about what to look out for on a car of that age... Also, I have read in loads of places that the fuel economy on the E320 is comparable to the C220, can that really be true?! I reckon a C220 has got to be cheaper to run, but am I wrong?!... Trying to narrow down my search, so any thoughts or advice would be most welcome!

In a W203 C, look at the C270 rather than the C220. It'll give good mpg with decent performance. C220 could be a bit gutless. 2003 was the change from non-galvanised to galvanised, so I'd look at 2004 at the oldest.

recently purchased a C class C220 on a 54 plate. it is pretty quick and good on fuel. buy the avant-garde though. its worth it.

I reckon around 34 average for the E320cdi and the C220cdi will see 25% more at the very least, more like 35% more.

I saw 45 on my s203 C270 (once the MAF and thermostat were sorted) - that on normal shopping trips etc, got 50 or 50+ on long runs! Best one was a 2 1/2 hour fast run from Somerset to Tenterden, A303, M3, M25/26, M20, average speed shown as 69mph, average consumption 52mpg!

At 10 years old, it's almost a no brainer - get the C class.

A 10 year old E Class is a world of pain waiting for some unsuspecting mug to happen. Way too much (mostly unnecessary) technology just begging to go wrong - plus iffy reliablilty - and it usually costs a fiftune to fix.

Rust is something both vehicles have form for. Galvanisation is no guarantee (as I and several others have found to their cost).

Thanks Corned, that's really useful... From the few 10 year old E classes I've seen, I got the impression they weren't as good as the equivalent C classes, not been able to put my finger on it tho!

Have you considered an E220cdi?

I think that would make a great buy, less to go wrong, 40mpg average and 55 on a run, and you can just waft in it.

E220? Ah, okay, I hadn't considered that because I thought that the engine was not big enough for such a large car... I don't drive fast, but I thought the E220 might be a bit underpowered?

They're ok. I had a saloon and it was no ball of fire but it wasn't that slow. Easily kept up with traffic and bar fast cars would show a clean pair of heels to a lot of stuff
