Has anyone removed the wiper linkage on a 107 / 450slc / sl ???

Mine seems to have seized and the motor turns fine, the relay is fine but the linkage is jammed - and it looks like I may need to take the entire dash out to get to it??

Anyone??

Gavin.

I have an exploded diagram of the motor

but not where it sits. I think you might be able to get at it through the glovebox, although I'm not sure.

I now have the definitive answer - and a warning.....
The linkage can ONLY be removed following the removal of the dashboard. it is held in with 3 10mm bolts from the back, behind the dash and behind the heater matrix etc.

I took mine to the merc breakers over near leeds and they did the job (including a new linkage) for £250 which was a ****** good price.

If you have a 107 then my suggestion is that before things go bang (like mine did) then get the wd40 on the job and spray as much of the linkage as you can.

Gavin.

I'd suggest a spray lubricant rather than WD40 though, it's technically a water dispersant, not a lubricant.

Me too!

Hi Gavin,

I've just read your post with horror! I have just bought a 380SL with seized wiper linkage. Are you sure there is no way to free it off with penetrating oils etc? Which bit on yours had seized? Had part of it actually broken? It seems on mine to be the bit near where it passes through the bulk-head.

Regards, Dylan

Just as a follow up as I stumbled back upon this thread. I used mole grips and penetrating oil and it soon freed up.

I've an '86 500SL and mine have stopped working. Motor OK Have removed glove box but still cannot get any movement on the linkage. :(

I've given it plenty of WD 40 and other stuff but nothing.

I'll give it another go. All suggestions greatly received.

Chris

Hi Chris,

If your problem is the same as mine, I removed the wiper arms and over the period of several days soaked the splines with wd40 as it was where they pass through above the bonnet that they were siezed. I then clamped mole grips really hard onto both of them and just wiggled them. They eventually got more and more movement, until they started to move with the motor. (don't use the motor until you get full movement or it could burn out). More and more wd40 and persistance and they were working fine within a week.

Good Luck. D
