2017 c class estate 250d AMG line with upgraded MB 19 inch alloys
Good morning, I am a new member but felt incensed enough to post about my tyres. I purchased a c class estate 250d AMG line and collected March 1st 2017. I chose the 19inch alloy option upgrade. Please note 250d NOT AMG 63 supercar or suchlike! I am 60 plus and drive very steadily and have covered 10,500 miles. Just pre the first service I discover I need two new front tyres as they are both incredibly worn on outside edges and will very soon need two new rear tyres. ATS say the front looks like a camber issue(?). Mercedes Benz are completely uninterested of course. Do we think it reasonable to sell a very expensive non-supercar that needs new tyres after 10,000 miles? btw I have been quoted £497 for both front tyres excluding fitting. So I'm up for a grand or so on tyres after a year? Not fit for purpose I say.

Find another tyre supplier.
That price is ridiculous. For that money I can replace all four tyres on my V8 SL.

As for the alignment issue you must still be under warranty so have your dealer 'take an interest' and sort it out. I would suspect the issue on the front is excess toe in but it will need to go on a Hunter alignment machine to get it verified and corrected.

+1 for all the above, look on www.camskill.co.uk for tyre prices and different options on brand

I find Blackcircles to be good value for tyres, worth getting an online quote.

Oh thanks for your replies already. Yes I've written a strong note to Mercedes requesting immediate action! Let's see what they say. And of course - I'll follow all your leads on tyre suppliers. thanks again.

It is normal for the outside edge to go. And depending on the softness of the rubber 10k might be normal too.

250 quid a corner is hilarious though.

Millie, you don't say where you are? We may be able to suggest a better dealer than the one you currently use.
The quality of MB dealerships is, shall we say, 'variable' with some being atrocious and others being very good.

I bought from Sandown Mercedes Guildford and live in Petersfield - so have Portsmouth, Chichester, Southampton reachable?
Yes and I have checked because of reaction it was ATS that quoted £497 for the two front tyres EXCLUDING alignment which was an extra £64. These are Pirelli run flat (NEVER AGAIN!!!) tyres. I'm not very technical.

The sizes are

Front: 225/40R19 93W XL
Rear: 255/35R19 96W XL

Mercs do wear the outside edges of their tyres due to the way the wheels turn, they lean over more than other makes

I would bin the run flats and put a can of goop in the boot but if you want to keep the run flats then this is an excellent tyre

If you could stretch to Basingstoke they have an excellent reputation and are one I have used and been pleased with in the past (admittedly 20 years ago nearly).
Another of our members here has more recent dealings with them and rates them highly.

I run my E-Class on 19" wheels and living in Portsmouth, buy my tyres from ProTyre in Cosham. I pay about £180 (ballanced and fitted) for slightly bigger sizes than yours (245 &275) on Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 3's. They seem to last me at least 17,000 miles.

I mostly use the Asda Tyres website and in the sizes I've needed over the past few years they are there or thereabouts on price. An easy to use and clearly presented website with fitting included at a local dealer of your choice.

I was surprised at the £497 a pair particularly as it excludes fitting. Asda would be £436-£452 for the same size/spec runflat depending on choice of make. Better but still expensive.

https://www.asdatyres.co.uk/225-40-19?specialist=rft

The ones JBell links at Camskill would be £336 delivered. A bargain as long as you are happy to arrange fitting yourself. Also you have to be prepared to deal with the split liability between supplier and fitter if there are any issues.... I'm not but many are and in truth problems with new tyres are few and far between.

Normal in general or just this car?

I ask because my big heavy car is on 10,000 miles for the tyres and there is no discernible excess wear on the outside or inside edges.

Same size as my C250 although I have 4matic version, mine has Contis but all 4 are still at 6mm after 8000 miles and wearing evenly across all four too.

On a rear drive car, the rear tyres should go first and the front ones last much longer. I have found, though, that the larger the wheel size, the quicker the tyres wear.

As an example, my 3 litre, with more power and torque than yours, has 17in wheels and I get over 40k miles from the front set and over 20k miles from the rears

another motoring improvement ,it was not that long ago 40,000km was not unrealistic. now we seem to accept less than 20,000 km as good.

Your average Yank wants more miles per tyre and gets it.
