I am having somproblens with my 300TD since ive had it if you drove it for a long time on the motorway then when you sloed down then you would get a nasty cunking noise for a while untill it cooled down for a bit then it was good. i presumed it was the exaust heating up and culunking when it got bigger. but i think its some part of the dive chain. after taking it 5500 miles round europe this summer it has got louder and it happens all the ime when you accelerate and go round corners. it sounds to be from the back of the car posibly on the divers side. tried to find out what it was by sticking my head out of the rear door whilst some one was drying. but i got scared of loosing my head. it sounds like some one hitting a heavy peice of metal with a hollow hammer iraticly (checked for lepricorns but no luck).

can anybody sugest a way to find out what the problem is without taking every part of the drive chain apart and inspecting it?

Thanks

Possibly a wheel bearing starting to go. I get the occasional 'Wump, Wump, Wump' off the back. I have the new bearing, just not changed it yet.

Well

If and golly gosh you have one of the MB's with a chain drive they do tend to be clunky  go to a motorbike shop and get a scotoiler that should fix it :D :p  IF you meant drive train - well i asked my stepdad who is an ex train driver - a very smooth one he was one of the selected few to drive the Royal Train - and he said it was an art and a skill not easily acquired to stop all the buffers clunking together - that was in the days before solid buckeye couplings of course - oh help i think we just went off the rails here - time for a cup of tea and then out to cut the grass methinks - lovely sunny day up here in the frozen north

I think that I might have suffered from the same thing in a previous car but it would only happen occaisionally and then only at speed. As it was only used as a town car I rarely had the problem. It was like a rapid banging from the rear.

It is always worth trying the cheeper things first.
Replace the oil in the rear diff.
Check for wear in the joints and bearings.

I susspect that the diff is the only component complex enough at the rear of the car to create the noise.

does it get worse on right and turns or left turns?
(try accelerating hard left/right as this will push the weight to the back
and highlight the noise) . If it is specific to a corner, then likely to be a wheel bearing or DS joint as above.

If not biased to one side, then have you checked the diff oil level?
Also, whats the mileage ?

I can see that you are going to have fun  I have mine to do as well and am dreading it. Having tools made for the job as I dont want to remove the rear hub. Any tips you can pass over on this will be greatfully received.

Just my thoughts here, Bearings normally set up a whine at certain speeds often around 25-50mph, they cant be heard at low speeds, the noise is not unlike a tram or trolley bus.
