I seem to have a problem that has cropped up quite alot, after an oil change, using the usual 10/40 semi-synthetic oil, i have a noisey tappet, lasts on and off for a minute or so and then goes. Would another oil change with a slightly thinner oil help, as I have read on previous threads that the problem can cure itself in time, if this is the case how long should I leave it before changing the tappets?

the tappets in your car are hydraulic and there is no adjustment, most older mercs have this problem...nothing to worry about as long as the noise goes away when you increase the revs......

Someone on the forum mentioned just last week or so about a product in a can from the 'Wynns' company which is supposed to 'cure' this. I can't work out what the science behind it can possibly be but I suppose just because I can't figure it doesn't mean much! Never seen it on the shelves personally.

Mine do this as well, but only while the oil pressure is building up. If you watch the gauge, the noise should stop when the pressure hits 3 Bar.

No it rattles pretty much for a couple of minutes even when oil pressure is on max and then is fine, was silent until the oil change why should changing the oil have caused this?

That doesn't sound right. It could be something is restricting the oilway maybe. Could some gunge have got past the filter during the oil change.

What oil are you using?

Use oil flush too, otherwise you may as well have not bothered, and left the old oil in....

your new oil will be more viscous than the old sludged up stuff - it will offer less resistance to the slightly noisy tappet(s) hence the increased noise after an oil change.

It's not unusual (to quote Tom Jones) and I wouldn't worry about it unless they are really clattering.

The Tappet Is Not Noisey On Initial Start Up Now But Begins To Clatter After A Minute Or So And Then Stops Once The Temp Gets To Just Under 80, A Friend Suggested Putting Some 5/30 Oil In Any Thoughts?

I think you will find that is not a thick enough oil ,,,best with a 20/50 oil in an older engine..

The problem seems to have disappeared, no noise yesterday evening or today, so touch wood it may have cured itself
