I've got a damaged 124 300TD 4matic a left hand drive turbodiesel estate.
Has anyone else got one or ever seen one here in the U.K
I am wondering whether to rebuild it or not to bother

Hi,

I've got a 1988 (F reg) 300te 4matic. It's got all the orginal manuals and price/option lists, etc. From what I can tell, the 4matic wasn't sold in this country in diesel form, but I could be wrong.

Hope that helps.

no you are right this is a left hooker, 4 matics were only ever petrol or turbo diesels and since the turbo is on the right hand side of the engine sitting in the car they could not be built as RHD models

I bought it off a guy who had it imported from new as a grey import

I've never seen another over here

I also have 91 300TE 4 Matic
I will be shortly taking it off the road to rebuild the front drive shafts and the transfer box, my transfer box is transfering hyd oil into the lubrication oil of the transfer box

Apart from the Merc niggles I love it to death, it will cruise happlily at any illegal speed up to a genuine 135 mph will tow virtually any weight and will get along surprisingly muddy farm tracks, I am retiring it as a everyday work horse and am just going top use it as a weekend drive

If you ever want to add another 4Matic to your current stable let me know. Mine's only got 76,000 on the clock and in really super nick for its age, but I'm starting to run up more mileage from work. Therefore, I'm thinking a diesel/turbo diesel car could be a better long term bet.

I have to say I wouldn't bother with a diesel, they offer no greater ecomomky than a petrol if driven to the same performance, they cost more to run, diesel being typically 3 - 4 p a litre more than petrol and they need more regular servicing
finally What car 3 or so of years ago did a report which worked out that you had to do more than 50000 miles a year to justify the higher purchase cost of a diesel car against its petrol equivalent at the time diesel was a similar price to petrol

I've run quite a few diesels and always thought how good they were including my 300td 4matic, (the best ever!) However the 300TE 4matic turns in a similar mileage figure when driven at diesel speeds and accleration times, I think that what kills a petrol car's figures are people like me with heavy right feet ,who cant help using that petrol power to get up to speed quickly

Has your 4matic had any big bills, how much do you think its worth?
I might be interested

Hi Simon,

It's interesting what you say about petrol v diesel. Re: the car; it's probably easier if you give me a call in the first instance, so I can give you any details you need.

If you call me on 07976-520022, I'll call you back.

Regards,

Kevin
