I have just bought a 1996 E320 Cabriolet and am finding my way around it so some help would be appreciated please!

Am I right in thinking that this model was not fitted with an alarm because
1. Having read the handbook (!) it says that if you can pull the light switch in the boot to turn the light off, then there isn't an alarm and I can.........and

2.Under the bonnet by the ABS unit there is a Scorpion 364 alarm fitted and I dont know if this is working. The central locking works and the hazards flash 3 times on unlocking and it won't start if you leave it for about 10 seconds without locking/unlocking again.

Needless to say I have no instuctions for the alarm.

And lastly the boot infra red receiver doesn't seem to work because I cannot lock/unlock the car from it.Are they easy to change? The door one works OK.

Sorry to be so long winded but any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks for that,Malcolm, especially the diagram.

I will dismantle the boot trim in the next few days and have a look.

According to info I obtained when first insuring my E320 cab delivered June 1996 and registered November 1996 it has an alarm designated MBSS TCI-149/1095 if that helps.

Hi Marv
Thanks for that info.
Mine was delivered Feb 1996 and registered in March of that year and the reason that I think that it has an aftermarket alarm fitted is because there are 2 sensors located/sicking out of the A pillar.

Do you know if alarms were fitted as standard? Can you pull your boot light switch out to extinguish the light as described on page 93 of the handbook?

There was no alarm fitted at the factory - the Germans didn't steal cars at that time, their theft rate was one eighth of ours - but UK dealers fitted a number of "standard" alarms including the Scorpion

If your car has the RCL remote locking with the flip-out key that incorporated an effective immobiliser

Many cars have had aftermarket alarms fitted, some to replace broken RCL systems

As usual with W124s the only hard & fast rule is: there are no hard & fast rules

Thanks Nick

There is an immobiliser because if you dont start it within about 15 seconds of unlocking it, the immobiliser does its job and it wont start.

And I'm starting to realise the hard and fast rule!!

If you have a sensor by the boot lid then you have RCL locking. Auto-immobilising after sitting for a while is typical of RCL

AFAIK the sensors are simple items - the brain and the keys are the expensive bit. If the sensor is bad I'd try and source one from a breaker. It's probably the same as on the rear of an estate

Regarding the handbook, I would expect it to refer to a car without a UK spec retrofit alarm. So it may not be 100% accurate for your car

Welcome & nice car, btw
