Help :!:
My 1994 e220 estate, blower is giving trouble :( .At first it didnt always kick in when I switched it on,then it started to only kick in after about 20 secs or so,now when it does kick in it makes a slight rumbling sound similar to a rough bearing.I read in a previous post that you can access the motor from under the bonnet but I was also wondering where the fan speed control reostat is hidden. It's starting to get cold and it is nice to be able to see where you are going.I have done 210k in the old girl so I suppose the newness is just wearing off.Anybody out there got any bright ideas please

Mick,

I take it you don't have climate control?? So you have a 4-speed fan switch?

My W124 would only work on speeds 3 and 4 when I got it, but I was able to pull it out of the centre console and clean the contacts, and it's been fine for 4 years now.

The blower motor is not exactly accessible under the bonnet. You have to remove the windscreen wiper arm and motor to get at it. Haven't done it, but it's sounding like you may have to with the noise it's making. There should be a few writte-ups around on how to do it.

Cheers,

Robert

Hi Mick

My 124 had a blower motor that did not work when I bought the car. I took it out - yes you have to remove the windscreen motor etc - but it was not toomuch of a problem. The bearings were OK and the brushes had plenty left. The commutator was corroded so with gentle cleaning and polishing without stripping it down I managed to get it to run. I bench ran it for 12 hours and then reinstalled it - so far nor problems!!!

regards

paul

Blower motors are one of the last remaining parts of a car that are relatively simple. Had one go on a SAAB once. Given your milage it is probably just tired! I suggest checking and cleaning the 4 speed switch inside the cabin, and then if that fails take out the motor and clean it and regrease the bearings which should all spin easily. Clean all electrical parts and wipe with alcohol or meths. Bet it works.
