I dare say this may be slightly complex, but I have a 124 convertible registered in August 1993 on an L registration. I saw another L registered car but with the facelifted bonnet and wondered if anyone knows the date from which all subsequently registered cars were of the later model?

The face first lift 124s came out in Sep 1989 and again in June 1993.

The 124s rolled out from Dec 1984 to Aug 1985 and some 2.7 million variants were built

The convertible stayed in production until July 1997

Thanks. So, there are pre and post 1993 facelift cars on 'L' registrations then.

It was (and still is) a popular mod to make a pre facelift 124 look like a post facelift car.

Parts are easily available.

Yes. But all the pre-facelift cars on 'L' reg, and some on 'K', have the uprated engine etc. They're sometimes known as half-facelift, and in my opinion are a good buy, having the 16 and 24 valve engines, but oil-based paint. My half-facelift 200TE was probably the best of the 3 W124s I've owned, especially regarding paint.

Actually they all had water based paint ,for a base coat, but the early cars up to 1999 had a 2 component top coat that was much too hard, a stone chips soon turned into a huge blister, with rust soon forming, the paint was better after 1999 and good from the face lift on

Thanks Malcolm for the link. It seems my car has 'paint preservation' but has lost it's wind deflector. Apart from that - all present and correct.
Another Malcolm.
