A fault has recently developed on my 1988 230TE whereby the drivers side heater cinstantly gives out hot air, regardless of the heater setting. This does not happen with the passenger side. Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this problem?

This is quite likely to be a dirty control potentiometer.

The two wheels that control the temp for each side of the car actually operate the potentiometers. Try ranging them both back and forth a dozen or so times to see if that has any effect. If no joy then it is fairly straight forward to remove that panel and spray the potentiometers with 'pot clean and lube' (Maplins).

Of course there are other components that also come into play, not least the duo valves (just behind the firewall drivers side) these fail open (hot) on loss of power. I would eliminate pots and test for 12v at the duo valves first.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

your heater problem

John,

I've just bought a 1988 300TE auto estate with same problem - I'd be grateful to know what the solution is (and cost!).

Thanks,
David
