I have a 1992 124 250D which, until now has started on the button. A couple of days ago it took a lot of cranking to start it, as if it was out of fuel and it eventually started on one, then two until it was running normally. It starts as if it is picking up from a shortage of fuel just like the time I ran it out of fuel a year ago. I cant see anything relating to the incoming pipework. Can the fuel drain back into the tank?Has anyone any suggestions?

Air in the fuel lines is quite common - you should see the bubbles in the lines by the fuel filter housing.

Check the various seals on the fuel lines.

Mine's just come back from an injection specialist as I had leaks by the fuel pump. Exactly the same symptoms.

First and cheapest thing to go for, change all rubber fuel lines as they do perish over a period of time. Second as above, change large, small, and tank filter. let us no how you get on. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the advice, I changed the rubber pipes and there is no sign of air moving along the clear pipe. It will start immediately after standing about 45mins but after longer it seems that air gets into the pump, (or somewhere). The o rings do need replacing and that is the next job.

leaks and problem starting

Many thanks for the advice. To cure the whole problem the o rings and the copper crush washers were changed. O rings only didnt solve the problem - new washers are vital to curing the leak from the stubs.

When it eventually fires up does it chuck out lots of white smoke, untill it's running on all cylinders?

If so that does indicate that some glowplugs arn't working....sorry should have read your last post properly...seems the job is done.

Hi, can you please describe where the copper crush washers fit in?
