Hello,

If I buy 17" alloys to replace the 16" alloys on my 2004 W211 will they simply bolt on? It's an Avantgarde. I've seen a reference on a wheel site to them only being fitted in conjunction with sports suspension, which is why I ask.

Thanks

What rim ET numbers will fit my SL - R129.

Hi Malcolm, I keep finding you all over this forum, it's obviously down to three basic things, I've had a few niggles with my new SL, I'm looking to change a couple of bits and you seem to have answers for everone. Well how's about this one, can you help.

I'm look'in to buy some different rims for the car from ebay. When I had my previous SL500 I bought a set of AMG rims and they had certain ET numbers, I knew they were the one's designated for the car so I had no concerns about buying them. I have asked you previously about ET35's fitting the R129 and you said they were ok, I've now seen another set/style which I 'might' bid for from an SLK 350. The rear pair are 8.5J and are ET30's and the front pair of 7.5J are ET36's - in the event would they be ok. Also, can you tell me - are the ET numbers all about offset, and do you know what ET numbers are compatable for the R129 and which one's what aren't

Kind Regards
Dale. ;)

You just find the 129 on this chart, and it tells you the off sets. the higher the number on the offset means that the wheels sit further in, lower the number and they will sit further out. With cars that have ESP (post 96-7) you must not deviate too far or the handling will be upset.

The other thing to consider is will the wheels clear the brakes

Thanks for the info and link - so what is one increment?
It would seem that the standard rim is an ET34, so if I'm considering a style with an ET35 offset what is the difference dimensionally.

Dale.

The offset is measured in millimetres Dale, so ET35 means that the wheel mounting face to the hub is 35mm offset from the centre line of the wheel

Another thing to watch out for on the SLK 350 wheels is that the fixing bolts may be 14mm, and your car uses 12mm.

The 1mm difference on the offset is fine

Thanks, and good moaning to you. :D The other info on that chart is the compatable tyre sizes. It appears that the 8.5J x 17 rims for the R129's have 245 section tyres but the R230, with the same size, have 255 - why is that? - seeing that they are the same size width and diameter rim I would have thougt they would have run the same size tyre. Dale.

You have a range of tyres for each wheel size so the 245/255 is just down to what they want to do. I suspect 255s are considered to be a hard nosed sports size so its a fashion thing.
Mine is on factory Ankaa wheels 8.5Jx17 ET38 running 245/45/17 tyres (Factory spec). I'm not sure why MB specify sports suspension either but I guess mine must have it. Certainly handles well. One word of warning though. My Dads 16" 225 tyred 211 rides more nicely than mine on the UKs rutted road network and doesn't tramline half as much. It doesn't corner as well or look as good but it is a trade off that I sometimes wonder about the merits of as I'm wrestling it out of another rut.

That's a very valid point regarding the ride and tramlining, and I do prefer a car that rides well and doesn't pull itself all over the place - and I've experienced both. To be honest, I've never changed a style of wheel on one of my cars before, not only because the originals have looked pretty good already but also 'cause I've believed that the manufacturers obviously give that very important aspect of a car a lot of attention and development. The only exception was when I changed the wheels on my SL500 R230. The car as bought had 19" diam Antera rims and they were changed for the normal 18" diam AMG wheels and although a wide rim they were markedly better. Bearing in mind, that in the main, I don't think many of us really use the performance of a wider tyre to its true potential, and if the original equipment looks and performs pretty well, then for me I would choose the original equipment and comfortable ride over the pose.

Dale ;)

You will only have a narrow side wall, and the ride could be bumpy, 18" are better

The first figure is the tyre width, the second the sidewall height and the third the diameter, other than that it is in my post 14 above.

If you are going to fit larger diameter wheels, then the height of the tyre must be reduced. so that it will fit, and the speedometer kept accurate

In my wheel search I've heard the phrase "diamond cut" referred to as the OEM finish on Ankaa wheels. What does it mean? There are some ebay refurbs stating that the finish is diamond cut and as good as new.

Diamond cut is a finish that does not last, this is a wheel that has been turned to give a very bright look.

Once the refurb guys do them, the guarantee is only for 3 months.

Any paint finish without pigment is weak, and cannot last, even though the top coat is a 2 pack.

These days I always recommend that wheels are finished in chrome paints as used by many new MBs

I have a W211 Estate with 17" wheels. I want to put a set of Kahn RS-S wheels on but I need longer bolts.

What size are the bolts that are currently on the car? M12 or M14? I think the thread is 1.5mm?

Thanks

The 211 wheel bolts are M14 do make sure that the wheels are hub centric or it will be very hard to balance them
