Hi I have a 1993 W124 E320 Cabriolet and would like to fit a set of AMG monoblock alloys 17" x 7.5 H2 ET 42. Mercedes say they won't fit, can anyone confirm:
a) that they will fit without scrubbing?
b) what tyre size I should use, they currently have 225 x 45 but I would like a higher profile tyre if possible?
c) Will the current bolts be OK (running std 8 spoke alloys)?
d) what make of tyre should I use, thinking about conti 5's?

Many thanks

I doubt they will fit the ET is too high for that car, IIRC the front brakes on those are massive so require an even lower offset somewhere around ET15 so you would need spacers

Thanks, I seem to be getting mixed responses to this, Chris are you sure with the ET being 42 or is JBell correct?
Does anyone actually have these wheels with this offset on their W124???

Thanks to those you have responded, appreciated

My bad, it's the W126 that requires a lower offset, the W124 is 33-42 all round

OR

33-42 front and 35 rear if using staggered

Coupe looks great, I'm rather put off by the modifications advised which include putting spacers in the front wings and putting spring travel limiters in the suspension, any other views on these mods? Must do or nice to do??

235/45 is the correct size tyre. 42 et is correct.

Can't see why you'd need any modifications since the tyre should be the same diameter as standard.

Really not necessary to do. It's consequential of TUeV requirements to allow for variations in tyre seciton width and vehicle (mis)alignment.

Come on guys, can we stop using these "general guides"? It's not helpful to new members who are invariably looking for quick definitive answers.
General guides are generally wrong: they're fine for simple Ford fitments but are very misleading for MB vehicles..

AMG cast wheel (styling 2) B6 6 02 0086

225/45 tyres

just the wing extension set required (£9.25 from Inchcape in July 2009)

spring travel limiter not required for that size.

All from the official merc leaflet March 1997 for the 124 vehicles.

235/45 is the correct size tyre. 42 et is correct.

Can't see why you'd need any modifications since the tyre should be the same diameter as standard.

If the 235/45 came from the Alloy wheels direct fitting chart i'm thinking it's a typo- one of several regarding w124 tyre sizes i think as it spits out different sizes on the individual wheel pages. The MB fitting instructions for these wheels spec a 225/45/r17 presumably one reason would be because they happen to have the same rolling circumference as the standard 195/65r15 tyres...
While the diameter is the same the width isn't, they effectively sit ~ 10mm closer to the arch and around the same amount closer to the strut (compared to the sportline 205/60r15 on a 15 x 7" et42 wheel). As said MB had to worry about various regs that we don't and also things like driving over Belgian pave and speedhumps at eleventy million mph with a car full of Americans + their lunch

I would do as kth286 in the above post... the wing spacers may not be necessary with the correct et42 wheels* but worth doing imo. As said bolts are the same ones used with the standard 8 hole MB alloys.

* mine is wearing the et35 version of these which sit 7mm further out in the arch (making clearance worse) and the fronts did rub occasionally (just touching the inner edge of the wing cladding when the suspension is compressed enough/turning over a speedhump) prior to shimming the wings out

that same wheel (as I outlined above) also came in 8.5x17 but with et of 30.

the recommended tyre sizes for 124 are 235/45 front and rear.

advice for that size of wheel/tyre combination is to fit spring travel limiter in addition to wing spacers.

Bump resurrection as looking at 17's for my S124 but also have some 40mm lowering springs
