I'm looking to buy an 18v impact wrench, what do people recommend is a decent but not overly expensive make.

In the same boat myself, I've a notion just to go for a Parkside (Lidl) the next time they come up but have seen various reviews differing in their effectiveness at high torque. Seems to be the best thought of are Milwaukee, Makita or DeWalt but they are in a different price range so for my occasional use probably a luxury.

As inferred to above, Milwaukee really are the go to people in this field.

I bought something inferior a long time ago and ended up just using it as a nut runner as it wouldn't move anything with any torque applied to it. I even had to crack wheel nuts with a breaker bar before I could undo them. :(

Looking on Amazon the Ryobi is at the top end price wise which for my usage is overkill. I want the wrench to work but ideally spend around £100ish. I have seen cheap wrenches rated at 420nm and expensive ones rated at 190nm, I assume this is torque ratings that the wrench can undo.

Wheel bolts are around 90 - 130nm so that will give you an idea of how much power you need

I have the Ryobi and find it a nice bit of kit. Has 3 settings so can be used at lower torques too.

Smart + others :)
We have Mac and dewalt. Shifts far more than an air impact gun.

I have the DeWalt and it's brilliant. Even though wheel bolts are usually not more than 130Nm (as stated), they are often 'monkeyed' on by wheel guns. The Milwaukee is even better but the price is much higher than the DeWalt.

I went for the DeWalt for a few reasons.

1. The power stated was around 900Nm breaking torque so should do everything
2. I was in the process of updating my old DeWalt drill and so bought a drill, batteries and charger before so just needed bare tool
3. The price as a bare tool was not as much as you think
4. The 4ah and 5ah batteries can be bought from reputable sellers on ebay for about half RRP
5. Gave me an excuse to buy more tools to fit the batteries :D

Yes wheel nuts should be done up to 130Nm but often it's more, however whilst mine are always torqued up correctly when it comes to undoing them they always needs a lot more torque, I'd say double at least if the wheels haven't been off for a while.

I bought the Lidl one in there last promo seems quite good so far and for £60 it included a battery, charger and some impact sockets.

I have a Ryobi one as well, that I've had for years, used it an awful lot, but mainly for taking the wheels off and on for my track car and every one else's, also for stripping cars and engines.

A man who does a lot of work for me uses "Lidl Power" as he calls it and I have to say it does the job, the warranty is fantastic and he just gets another one sent if it fails during the three years.

I have a impact driver which is great for tough jobs around the house woodwork etc. I do use it on the car for wheel nuts etc but they have to be broken with a bar first. What is needed for heavy duty work is an impact wrench which normally has a 1/2 inch drive. The more you pay the more power you get.

Avoid the Lidl/Parkside 10.8V version, they claim it will put out up to 400Nm on breakout but only 100Nm on make-up, which to me appeared perfect as it should release nuts origianally torqued to 130Nm but be unable to overtorque tham putting wheels back on. It's a released nut wheel spinner only, has never been able to release a correctly torqued wheel bolt. Damned annoying, as my COPD meant I had a major problem even jacking the car up when I got a flat, was rescued by some passing walkers who saw how I was struggling for breath and rescued me, took over and changed the wheel for me.
