Hi Emma.

Yes, your mechanic is a good one for that advice. The 190 uses a mechanical auto box with none of the electronic whistles and bells that modern one's do. A Fluid change will go a long way and probably cure this but if it doesn't, gearbox centre's are very reasonable and if you know a mech who can remove the box for you and take it to the gearbox centre, chances are you would not spend a lot at all - most of the cost with gearbox repair is labour to remove and refit to the car. Every gearbox centre i have ever spoken to has been chatty and helpful so give them a try if the oil change doesn't cure it for you. The 190 gearbox is a good strong unit if it's driven with respect and it's not drastically expensive to fix. My 2.0 190E gets new gear oil every 12,000 miles with the maintainance service and it's never missed a beat - never needed a clutch in 81,000 miles either so respecting them does pay off. Mine is also a 4 speed so i'm not sure if it's different to yours but i would assume it's the same in it's pre-electronic design.

If it does turn out to need a new gearbox (I hope it doesn't, though), these kinds should be plentiful in specialist breakers. They are also pretty competitive for its fitting, too.
