with the NON-turbo2.5 liter 5 cylinder engine(OM602.911 is the specific engine type number) are there any specific after market parts for this engine or will i have to just try basic intake/exhaust/compression method also does any one know the maximum power and torque these engines can make (i want only a modest power boost and i would prefer to not turbo it considering cost) also how much power can the auto trans take? thanks for any help

The best "tuning" for these engines is a clean air filter and correctly adjusted throttle & kickdown cables

If you want more power & torque I'd fit the turbo, injection pump and inlet system from a LHD turbo car. You'll probably have to fabricate an exhasut manfold or modify a LHD one to fit

Check the thread on tuning a 250 turbo diesel for a good discussion on diesel tuning

wow. i didn't thought that you were still going to boost the engine's capabilities. As to what it is right now, it's pretty amazing already.

If you want a higher performance car get one with a petrol engine. The low poke is what gives your car its superb fuel figures and tuning it will make it use more fuel.

The 603 is a superb lump which will respond to some tuning tweaks, a turbo and the attendant reduction in compression ratio would no doubt give you some more at higher engine speeds but perhaps at a too expensive price tag, the 603 was made in 2.5 and 2.9 litre versions, I don't know what parts differ (or if anybody has done it) but that would also give an improvement at low engine speeds, older sprinters have a 2.9 603 engine, again perhaps costly.
Don't be tempted to go for a "sports" air filter, they just make a lot of noise and on most low poke diesels provide no power improvement, just make sure the standard one is clean.
The simple adjustment of the fuel pumps maximum delivery will give more power but this can only be adjusted up to the point of producing black smoke, and will inevitably degrade the fuel efficiency.

I don't think the transmission would hesitate at the power increase.

I have the same engine in my 124 and yes on some uphill grades it could use a healthy dollop of extra (another 50) horses, but this is only when driving in very hilly country or when wishing to get past a sluggard on a short straight, but if you drive such that to much speed is not thrown away (don't follow too close) brisk progress can be made, watch white van man do it in his transit.

Turbos for the early cars do come up on E.Bay for right hand drive. In 1985 the 190 and 124 diesels did not have them as the steering column was in the way, but 1987 a company in Norfolk manufactured them and is still in business today. My wife has a 250d in her 129sl ,best engine mercs developed well balanced and very little to go wrong. When changing fuel filters, I would also change tank one and small inline one under air filter box. Hope this helps
