Hi

It sounds like you have one of three maybe possibilities.

1. The fan switch is not working at the correct temp. They are rated at 100degrees centergrade. But usually come in at 110.

2. The thermostat is stuck closed.

3. The radiator is blocked.

Any one of these could cause the problem.

andy,

thanks for your helpful reply.

plan to change the cooling fan switch first,

which one is it -the 3 pin one or the 4 pin one?

andy,

i replaced the cooling fan switch which also incorporates the temp gauge sender(3 pin switch on my car) and the gauge behavior has normalised ,ie it hoovers just above the 80 mark on the gauge and fan cuts in at around the 100mark-no more climbing of the needle towards the red in heavy traffic or idling conditions-cost 8.40+vat from eurocarparts, stealership wanted 10+vat.#

so a happy ending to this overheat scenario-did not need to replace thermostat or radiator as they were not faulty-the tired 108,000 mile cooling fan switch was as suspected.
let us look forward to another smashing win for the england football team against nigeria.
