Do 190E 16v's have a lambda sensor? Or is it only later catalyst models that have one?

I have a 1990 2.5, should this have a lambda sensor and/or catalyst? I have a slight idle/response problem and the removal of the lambda sensor would explain it. How do I know if it should have one?

you will know whether you have a lambdasensor if you lift the driver's side carpet and find a twin wire going into the transmission tunnel. alternatively, look at the dial/knob in the engine bay (on the n/s inner wing) that is used to alter ignition for different fuel types: if your car has a catalytic converter (and hence a lambda probe), the dial will have the word "KAT" on it

Cheers - yes I have the wires but they stop under the driver footwell; they aren't connected to anything. I am trying to work out if they should connect to a lambda sensor or are usually just lying there connected to nothing.

Russ,

The cat fitment depends on the year and place of manufacture, unfortunately the 16V's suffer from idle problems as do a lot of older injection models.
My 2.5-16 has a idle problem that I am currently investigating, I've changed everything and it's still not working, I'll let you know when ive fixed it........

For idle problems look at:

Coolant temperature sensor (4 pin at front of engine)
Fuel shutoff switch (on throttle linkage)
Throttle position sensor (Built into bottom of throttle body, 3 wires)
Idle Control Valve (Right side of engine as you look in, 2 pin plug, a clean sometimes helps but sometimes you've just gotta replace it)
