had a look through the forum and cant decide if this is the right place for this,so if it isn't please feel free to move to another section....

and hi to every one..

my father in law has owned his 190e for 13 years now,he was the second owner, and he has left it with me to sell,

so the help i require is with the selling price...i have looked in the usual places ..auto trader, pistonheads, ebay, local press etc..but i have yet to come across one in this condition, here lies the pricing problem.

what would be a fair price to ask for a car in this condition?
late 1992 190e 2.0ltr s,taxed till mar 10,mot 1 year,74k miles,2 owners, full merc history,£1000s of receipts from merc for services and any parts,no expense spared, manual box, sunroof, all elec, amg body kit,( fitted by merc at time of delivery? also has been lowered again by merc? you guys will know these things and can advise )

some pics to help..( i have lots of pics so if any further needed please ask )

Hi,

This is a difficult one and it's very unfortunate it's a manual rather than auto otherwise I might have been interested myself.

I guess you're looking at maybe £1500 or so for a private sale in that condition. It certainly looks very good.

Good luck

£1500 should be your target.

Hi.

Splendid car and beautifully presented. I echo the comment about manual gearbox, which has always meant that such cars sell for less than automatics - usually about £500 less.

On the plus side are condition, mileage and history.

I have never heard of a 190E 2.0 litre S. How did this differ from the standard car? If there is significant differentiation, it could well be a selling point and worth emphasizing at sale.

Good luck - it will be interesting to hear how you get on. As a buyer I would be delighted to pick up a car like this for £1500. As a seller, I would start at £1950 and be (reluctantly) flexible. I am sure the good people of Edinburgh have excellent taste, and are not short of cash!

Don't want to take the wind out of anybody's sails but ebay has had many low mileage 190's in the past year and hardly any of them go above the grand mark. I bought my 190e last year admittedly with a higher mileage but with no rust damage, for half that amount. The figures quoted seem to fall into Cosworth territory or 2.6's, it's a fine car and I hope you get what you are hoping for but I think you need to be a bit more realistic with the price or you might be holding on to it longer than you'd hope.
There's a forum for 190's you'd might want to post on there as well.

With it being low mileage and fsh, you might try selling through a dealer who specialises in this vintage. Some will sell on commision or take it off your hands for a reasonable price. I don't know if there are any near you, though.

It really depends on how much of a rush you are to sell as to the price: there is quite a small market to sell to if you want top dollar.

I would echo the £1500 price tag - the manual box will count against it.
You could start by putting an ad on here to see if there is any interest.

i may be a bit silly here, and not know the merc market, but this is a lot of car,and maintained to a very high level.i was thinking in the region of £2-£2.5k.this is a stunning machine and the photos don't do it justice, thanks for the offer though.

is my figures really that far out?

Loads on ebay, granted some not in the condition of yours, however sell for between £400 & £1000 generally. Sincerely Best of Luck with it.

Golf --lexington has the price spot on !--my advice from a lot of experience take the cash and avoid the hassle of advertising and hanging on -
-(we have an immac manual 190E 80k fsh bought in London for 1k last year).

teddycatkin..

Ive just sold a1990 mk 2 golf gti for £2000.00.

it has nothing on this merc....as previously said i don't know the merc market, but i do know the car in question and the money ( i think stupidly spent at merc on it ),and its up keep.

there is a car for everyone this i believe,at £1000.00 on eBay i would question quite a lot about the car and owner, why wouldn't they offer the car to a proper enthusiast and owners forum?

i started this thread asking for help and advice on a price..

I'm grateful for the replys Ive had to date,i like the banter and friendly atmosphere generated but i feel the prices being offered for a piece of classic German engineering are terribly low,and i wish i found this market before i started dabbling in vws many years ago,as the cars i could have owned ( for the moneys offered here ) would have been stunning.

i dont think this car will go for sale,( due to the low market value, and feel it will go into a lock up and perish.) and that has to be a shame.

i just bought 4 tyres for my car and they where the best part of £700,and to think i could have got a merc..

mind boggling.

The w201s are still reasonably common at the moment so the prices are at the bottom of their depreciation cycle. They don't really rust, the engines and drive train are robust and they are reasonably simple to work on. This was true of the mk2 golfs five years ago as you probably know. It used to be possible to get a good mk2 gti for about a grand - I had one myself and it was brilliant. They are also harder to get as many have been modified and as they become rarer they will appreciate in value. This seems to be happening with the w123 shape e-class at the moment, where the values of the good ones has increased over the last ten years.

I would imagine that the w201 will become a desirable classic as so many people have had experience of them in the past and the design won't really age.

follow up to yesterdays thread regarding estimated purchase prices....

i have taken on board all that's been said re prices, and have tried to understand the merc benz way..

it seems its acceptable in this current climate and previously, to take a lesser price for what is a good piece of engineering..

looking on ebay and pistonheads and autotrader sites, yes there is cheaper cars, some with some history and some without any at all, some are clean and rust free and some are not..

does this mean that all cars of the same era are measured in the same price bracket?

this will be good for the buyer and bad for the seller...

I'm a great believer in " if you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you've always got "

if all merc owners ( of a certain age,the car not the owner ) think there pride
and joy is worthless, how can that be good?

sorry..if you think and feel that I'm a newbie and banging on a bit,but i have been absolutely flabbergasted by the low prices being banded about...

is there some other reason for this ..............like its not old enough yet i.e.late eighties and ninety cars? does it have to be over 30 years old to make it worth a bob or two?

i look forward to some interesting comments on this....

thanks

Some of the older cars just aren't that desirable. The sports cars and convertibles hold their value incredibly well, most of the saloons don't. There is a perception that the older Mercs are expensive to maintain, which they can be unless you do some home diy or use independents. Also, as many of the saloons have big engines they aren't particularly economical. There is just a small market for old mercs and as they tend to last very well there are many old mercs still running. I would imagine that the share of twenty year old cars on the road now that are mercs is much higher than that proportion was when the cars first came out.
