190E C250D or C200 - your input comments pse

I have just retired for the 2nd time and am deliberating what vehicle to buy for £1000.00 - Yes £1k in new money.
My requrement being driving enjoyment + low overall running cost ( carry out working repairs and servicing). My choice so far W201 190D 2.5 auto,or W202 series C250D or an early C200 D

Your views & comments welcomed on the viability of the W202 class or should I stick to the 190D?

The w202 diesel engines have more power than those in 190d. Yet w202 is the last simple, inexpensive, reliable, and DIY diesel. w202 c220d commonly gives over 40mpg.

I do not know if c200d were sold in UK. If you need morer info on c220d there are lot of owners on the forum.

I dont think the 200d was sold in the UK. The 220 was though. I'd tend to go for a 202 in preference as you get a few modern luxuries thrown in whilst it still being a DIYable car.

Whatever you get for £1k though is going to have issues I'd suspect. Anyone with a 'good' car tends to want more than £1k - its a sort of mental barrier. Less than that and you're in the 'get rid' territory. So, tread creafully or you could find yourself wth a money pit.

You are correct however there are 3 prices for any car

the asking price

the price the car is worth

and the one you are prepared to pay


spending money is easy

investing in car near impossible........hence my ceiling of £1000.00
