190e 1992 1.8 auto
Hi, I have a 1992 190e 1.8 auto with 84k miles. The car currently either starts rough or doesnt start at all. When it does start up it will die about 30 seconds after as the RPM will drop. I have tried to press the accelerator a little to keep the RPM up but even the slightest touch of the throttle kills the engine. A few weeks ago sometimes when the engine was cold it would feel sluggish at lights. Also after a short journey the car wouldn’t start unless i waited around 15 minutes and tried again. I have had a new battery fitted, new OVP and it’s had a full service 8 months ago including new fuel, air and oil filters. it’s currently at the mechanics but they’ve had no luck so far and they are thinking it’s an electrical fault? Anyone had this issue before and figured out what it was? Also the car has always idled in park and neutral at 1.5-2k RPM.

I have been told that the new OVP looks fried so this will be getting replaced again in the next few days and this may fix the starting issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

Check for any split vaccum pipes,, and any split hoses,, or rubber joints you find for vacuum leaks with a smoke machine . All the normal things like spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm ,along with ht leads will need replacing,, that the first place to start . Then go on to the fuel side . Idle is far to high needs to be around 80 =90 at the most at tick over . > Fuel pump relay can stop the car, so i would get new one <.. Do you know if the car as an idle air control valve IAC ? if it as i would clean that out with carb cleaner after its removed . As for the fuel, the fuel pressure needs checking to see if fuel pumps are doing the job right . And the fuel filter could be blocked .This model will have a carb on yes ? these alone can cause problems they to have vacuum pipes on them to work them . And last check and clean all fuses ,and if they are white metal replace them also, for copper and ceramic type

Hi thanks for your reply. I’m unsure on whether it has a carb or not but I will send this to the mechanic and see if he has done any of the things you’ve said. It does have an IAC yes this was causing issues with the start up last year and it seemed to fix it after cleaning it. Will try the IAC again and see if thats any help.
