During MOT test mechanic has shorted out across fuel pump whilst tightening union nut, supposedly because of leak. (There was an occasional whiff) Apparently it's OK to do this with battery still connected! Eventually the auto electrician turned up, and after much prompting (following my earlier reading of similar thread - for more than an hour he insisted this was nothing to do with the fuel pump) he removed the relay next to the OVP, disappeared for a few minutes, replaced it and engine now runs. He's soldered something inside the relay, so my question:-
1) What else does this relay/control unit protect? I'm concerned that this now isn't the fuse and a more expensive repair could be on its way. (Part no of relay is 003 5445 1905.)

Take great care here, there are no fuses inside, the chances are he has shorted pin 30 to 87 to by pass, if you want to post it,i can check it.
it may have blown the foil on the PCB, or open it and take a photo magnified.

As Malcolm says get it checked if he has bridged the relay out then asssuming that relay and not your ECU switches your pump then your sparky friend has drastically compromised your safety in the event of an accident. The relays purpose is to switch off your fuel pump in the event of an accident and not leave you trapped in an ever growing inferno!! Get it checked out

I have a 003 545 1705 that you could borrow, I will check it out to see if it will fit.

Malcolm, ultymate, sorry for the delay replying, thanks for the responses, this is a bit of a lash up, as you say I think he's bridged the foil on the PCB. I can take into work to get it checked more thoroughly. If it wasn't for the clues I found here on the relay's location I think the electrician(?) would have completly dismantled the car by now!! Many thanks again for the assistance -top men. I'll post the results of the examination and advise if I need more help.

Foil on circuit board was blown and soldered across, no short cuts made. I suppose the new joint could take a bit more current - do you think this could cause a problem? From the Haynes manual it doesn't seem to feed the ECU.
Thanks in advance, Len
