Here I am again with this idle speed query. Our car has been back to the garage to rectify the cold starting problem. However I am not satisfied that the result is how MB designed the car to operate.

Perhaps you could tell me if the following is normal behaviour for a '93 190E 2.0 Auto.

The car starts from cold 1st time with no accelerator, the revs rise immediately to ca.1500 rpm, then after 3-4 seconds they drop to 500 rpm and the car only just ticks over, if you apply some accelerator the car stutters but continues to run.

Surely the car should rev high on cold start for longer than a few seconds.
Idle speed in Drive/Neutral when warm is ca.750 rpm. Idle is lumpy though not smooth as you would expect.

Help/advice would be great.

Hi

190e should idle when cold and first started around the 1100rpm area. Drop down to 800rpm when hot out of gear. 600rpm when in gear. Pull away with out any problems. Once warm the engine runs of the mechanical system. Your vehicle may not be that smooth when ticking over. But surging would be a problem.

So I think they are fobing you off.

Same problem

I have much the same problem......starts when cold revs up to about 1300 rpm then drops to approx 700rpm. When put in gear the revs drop to 500rpm and when you put any pressure on the gas pedal it tends to stutter, but takes off. Any ideas on speedings up the cold idle speed? Works fine when at operating temp

Thanks guys

I agree with Andy, the car should run smooth and not stutter.
This is adjustment, should be no problem.

I live in Norway, I guess it's colder here and my 230 CE '88 doesn't have the problem. Even when very cold here, it is ni problem. This is not Mercedes design. This is just the garage not doing their job.
I've had the same problem, but it was just adjustment at the MB garage.
