I have a 114K 190E which has oil leaking from around the rocker cover, and the oil filler. Spark plug 1 was slightly oily, spark plug 3 was very badly oiled, with a solid grey/black build-up all over the elctrodes. Occassionally I get a puff of blue smoke from the back, but no pattern to it. It is not noticably using oil, although I haven't done a long trip for a while. Changing spark plug 3 for a new one fixed my cold starting problem I'd been having.

Friends at work tell me that the valve stem seals have gone, or that the pistons rings are worn.

Any advice as to how to diagnose this problem?

I did a simple compression test and all cyclinders read 200psi (ie at the top of the green on the gauge), although I recognise that this was not a cyclinder leakage test.

Thanks

Haig

If the blue smoke has that nauseous pong and is "bright" blue then the valve seals are gone, oily sparks usually mean worn rings. If valve stem seals are gone then smoking will get worse and ppl will start keeping thier distance esp when you accelerate!

Hi

I have a 190E which has had the valve stems replaced. It sounds like you have a similiar problem. Normally you can check them by driving down a longish hill with no throttle or brake on so the engine is effectively braking the car (may need to select a low gear for this) and accelerating at the end. If you see blue smoke then the valve stems are the culprit. That said mine didn't do this but was drinking oil at a real rate - the valve stem seal change sorted it out though. As an aside there is a specialist tool available that means you don't need to take the head off to do the job.
