nothing too extreme, but it's beginning to bug me: cold starts can take a lot of turns of the starter before the engine catches, sometimes fifteen seconds - although i don't crank it continuously for that time, maybe three goes with a couple seconds break. hot starts are never a problem, engine fires immediately always. plugs and leads were replaced at last service (3000 miles ago), mechanic said cap and rotor were fine. is this likely to be a simple thing?

You may wish to check the cold-start valve on the (Bosch KE jetronic) fuel injection system. It's a separate valve which provides more fuel for starting with a cold engine. It may well be a problem with this if it normally starts well with a warm/hot engine.

i would also check the auxillary air device as this also controls staring at low temperatures.

another thing worth checking would that your airflow sensor plate is not sticking due to gum deposits or dirt.

My 1990 190E is doing something similar. Starting from cold is a bit rough and the engine only starts up at 700 rpm even on the coldest morning. Changed the temperature sensor to no effect. Apart from that everything's running perfectly though.

Was wondering if you have the same slow idle when cold situation?
