I am about to ask my brother to fit two new rear coil springs to my 190E and a replace the rear subframe bushes with a kit supplied by GSF. I've read in the threads that this may be a bit much to ask my brother who will be doing this with a trolley jack in his driveway. My local Merc specialist costs were too much so I don't have many options but to ask him. He has a compressor and a Haynes manual. Can anybody give tips and advice regarding this job? Thanks

I am pleased to see that you have had a look at other threads before asking, The job you have in mind is quite heavy work and you must have the car lifted sufficiently high and securely stood before you start bashing at the rusted/tight/loctited bolts which will require removal to do the job, big long ring spanners and those useful bolt removers (handy socket like devices that grip onto what was the remains of a rusted bolt head) are going to be essential.

A ramp/lift is the best place to do the job, one of those with two arms that swing under the cars sills is the best for access.

There is little that's too special for diy other than the spring compresor and with luck it may be just one day of a job, the worst bits will be getting the old subframe bushes out of the eyes in the frame and getting (lowering) the frame into a position that allows access to them.

If you taking it to bits put new shock absorbers on at the same time if the old ones are of any age, the improvement will be tremendous.

Thank you

Thank you for your advice - most helpful indeed. This website is awesome. We borrowed the correct spring compressor from a friend and successfully replaced both (snapped it turned out) rear coil springs in the confines of the driveway. The Haynes manual (or us) was a bit vague on the rear subframe bushes job so I'm going to leave that to my local garage along with the front springs. I will have the shock absorbers changed in the New Year as I can afford them. I've given up on main dealer prices and continue to source parts from GSF and PC Merc breakers in London. Keep up this great forum. As a member I will try and help with as many 190E 1.8 queries I can.:p
