I have a 190e 1994 L manual. It has problems starting from cold, I called the AA, after checking a few items such as filter, alternator the patrol came to the conclusion that my engine gets flooded and thus causing the problem. He pulled out the fuel relay from behind the battery. He examined it and said it looked fine. He then asked me to depress the throttle and attempt starting whilst he did something near the fuel relay switch area, this enabled the car to start. However the next day it refused to start.

My qn is what do you think he did which enabled the car to start whilst i had the throttle depressed? also do you think i simply need to replace the fuel relay or is there a problem with the injectors etc?

many thanks

You should have asked exactly what he did to get the car started.

The fuel pump relay and OVP relay are in that area by the battery. I would try a new fuel pump relay and / or OVP relay. Has the ABS light been on erratically and has the car been stalling and harder to start? If yes then OVP relay's gone bad. If no then maybe your fuel pump relay is bad and the AA man bridged out the connectors. There should be an AA report sheet.

The mechanic is just disabling the fuel pump.

You have a over-fueling situation, causing the plugs to flood. Disabling the fuel pump and opening the throttle allows the plugs to fire again, because they're not being constantly doused with more fuel. Eventually they will fire (unless the battery goes flat first) and the engine will run once the fule pump is re-enabled.

Over fuelling could be caused by many things, including the injector, but also check the fuel pressure and engine-management temperature sensor.

The figures should be in the Haynes Manual.

Good Luck!
