Hello,

I have a 1966 Mercedes 250 SE. I had the distributor rebuilt, and installed new spark plugs and wires. The car starts fine when it is cold, but after I drive it for 20 minutes and park it, I cannot get it restarted until it completely cools off.

What is the issue? Any ideas?

Thank you,

If you mean it turns over but does not fire up, then this is a symptom of the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) or the Camshaft Position Sensor.

1966 - very unlikely to have a CPS....

check the basics like does it have fuel and a spark and go from there
could be lots of stuff - fuel temps and starvation - coil getting hot and bothered

Did you renew the distributor cap and rotor arm this was a common fault caused by condensation from a cold engine causing tracking of the spark along hairline cracks in the cap symptoms being the car stalls after 10 minutes running and won’t restart until the residual warmth of the engine dries out the cap usually about 20 minutes - don’t ask how I know lol

In that case, the ignition coil as you suggested is most likely.
A check of the resistance would confirm.
