With my 91 CE you need to check the level of the autobox oil with the engine running - it always overreads when stationary.

The fluid should be reddish and clear.

Don't know where you drain it from - you probably need to get under the car and have a good look. The handbook states you fill mine through the dip stick tube - don't know if this is car specific so you ought to verify this before you try..

if it is an auto then it will change gear itsself in D, there may be other gears available but these are for when you want to manually override the auto ie. going up/down long hills, overtaking etc.

Search this forum, there is loads of advice available and also try and get hold of an owner's manual for the car.

I imagine (if its like its younger siblings) that the number indicated is the highest gear it will automatically change up to - which would suggest that 4 will let the box use all 4 gears and would be the one to use for normal driving.
