I have a 1971 450 SLC, with sunroof.

I have owned the car for three years. Its condition was (and is) immaculate but for one tiny problem. I am unable to trace the source of a leak which ends up in the front passenger well.

I thought it might be water entering the back edge of the bonnet where it abuts the wing close to the passenger door - hinge pillar. Under the bonnet and just below this corner there are is a group of cables and hoses which run through the bulkhead, through a large grommet which is moulded to fit the cables etc. A small amount of rust has formed around this grommet - this is the only place I can think of where rain is getting in. However, work which I have done to protect this area under the bonnet has failed to eradicate the problem.

A few months ago, I spoke to a person whom I met at a classic car event, who claimed to have much experience of SLCs. My car wasn't there to view at the show but the man said the leak was almost certainly caused by a blocked drainhole.

But where? which drain hole? I can't see an obvious drainhole to rod clean.

How many drainholes are there and where are they, please? As I mentioned, the car has an original sunroof - where are the drain holes for this and where do the drainholes emerge at the bottom end of the drains (so that I can rod UP from the bottom to release the blockage rather than push down and further consolidate)?

The car has been garaged during my ownership and before, so the previous owner assures me. The problem is that I am restricted to fair weather use only because of the leak.

If anyone is able to help me with this, may I ask you to e-mail me at hallett.pollard@woolhall.co.uk ?

Yours Keith Hallett

drain holes either side of heater plenum chambe lead out in tunnel above the gear box like hoses, squeeze them to break up debris- requires lying on top of the engine face down - but worked well on my SL

there is also drain holes at each of the corners of the sunroof.
you can rod down - you can't rod up. The reason being, they drain into the sills (silly really) . Be very careful rodding though as when I did mine, the drain pipe got pushed off and I had to strip a fair bit out and feed a new pipe up to seal it again.
