1973 W114 Heater problem

Hello,
I have a 1973 280CE Coupe in fantastic condition bar faded paint and a faulty heater. I have been told by a Merc enthusiast that to repair the heater I'll need to take the engine out. Is this the case and what would you say is wrong with the heater - if I do take the engine out is it a case of replacing the whole unit - if so where would I get one from?
Many thanks
Ben

legend has it that when they were building the 114s, they started off with the heater on the production line and built everything else around it!
I've never done it myself, but apparently you have to take the dashboard off to get access to it. It's in the passenger compartment rather than the engine bay.

Well taking the dash to bits sounds more appealing than taking the engine out just for some warm air in the winter months?!

No you don't. You do need to take the centre consul out. It's a bit of jiggary pockary but you will get it out. But first try and flush it out.. Disconnect the three pipes to the heater matrix and attach the garden hose.
