1982 W126 Mercedes 500 SEL. LWB potential purchase

Afternoon folks,

I have been offered one of these V8 engined beasts for lemonade money.

Would appreciate past and present owners comments.

Are they as bullet proof engine wise as the W124?

Pretty much. The only slight downfall being that its the series 1 engine. But aslong as it all runs good it will be reliable. If it has any sort of misfire it could just be leads etc, but the fuel distributers on those early V8s are starting to wear and alot of second hand ones are the same. But yes, they are a very reliable engine, and the 126 doesnt suffer structural rust too badly either

Is it up for sale on the usual sites? Some of the early W126 cars over here are total buckets so be very careful. Best engine in a W126 is the 300 ......

I know the under the rear window they rust badly but this may be the coupes only on this

Yes the saloons do rust there too. The coupé is worse but it's common enough on the saloon too unfortunately.
