Hello everyone out there! I own a 2005 E280 CDI Sport Estate and a 1986 500 SEC which I bought last weekend for weekends which I have on a low mileage insurance policy. I am new to the forum and hope to get some good advice, especially on the older bird. I have also just sold a 1998 300 TD Avantgarde which hurt but I was out of room. I have loved the marque all my life since I was a child but only in the last couple of years been in a position to able to own and run one.

Good morning and welcome to the forum.

I note your comment on a "low mileage policy" for the 500 SEC. If it does not already offer you an "agreed value" in the event of a write off, that would be worth considering. There was a recent thread where a member had a very nice C36 or C43 written off through no fault of his own.

If your car is in specimen condition, an ordinary policy may be little consolation as the damage required to condemn it to being written off is not great, and as it is nowadays a bit of a one-off, the market value may well not reflect its value to you, either in what you paid or any development you have done.

We would love to see some pictures in due course (I think you need to make a certain number of posts - possibly 30? - in order to load pictures).

Insurance and maintenance

Hi guys and thanks for the warm welcome. The car cost me £1500 from a dealer. It has a new MOT and some history. Everything works on it, the leather interior is very good, no marks or tears. Outside its pretty good as well, a bit of bubbling behind the winscreen visible when you open the boot and a tiny bubble on one wheel arch. It's done 77,000 miles and I have all the old MOTs to verify that. Engine is very quite and smooth but I have got a slight tapping maybe a cam follower. I am taking it up to my local dealers for a health check just to be sure before I start spending money on it. Do you think that's wise or should I look for a local specialist. I live in the Bath/Bristol area. I have to say I have had nothing but excellent service from my local dealer since I started going there. As for insurance I was recommended a company called Adrian Flux which has worked out quite cheap but I'm limited to 1500 miles a year. Sorry to waffle on but if anyone out there has any advice it would be welcome. Thanks.

Let me add my welcome, and envy ;-)
The 280 is a great motor and I've always wanted an SEC too.

On your question, no don't go to the dealer. It's very doubtful that the dealers mechanics will ever have worked on an SEC. A specialist on the other hand is likely to know whats wrong with your car without you opening the bonnet. Always follow the expertise. In this case, that would be an indie.

An indie is an independent engineer, we can always find a good one where you live.

If ever you get any injection problem places like Bosch service centers are good at ½ th MB price

Workshop and Owners Manual

I don't know if anyone could help me with this request. I would like to obtain an owners and a workshop manual for my 500 SEC. Does anyone know where I could get these? I've been looking for a download link but not had much luck. Or maybe an online outlet where I could purchase them.

Welcome Coolhans!
Your just across the river from me!:)
I've found that especially hydraulic tappets benefit from using a flushing oil at oilchange time.
What colour is the beast I'll keep an eye open for you.

i've got a 1989 500sec w126 chassis, with a dash fault. the lights are all working but none of the gauges are working. i've checked all the plugs in the back of the unit and all the fuses and all seem to be ok, do anyone have any ideas?
