1985 300CD intermittant wiper....

Hi guys

My 1985 300CD seems to have developed an intermittant short in the wiper circuit that causes the wipers sweep once at odd times. Some days it doesn't happen at all and then others it happens several times.

I suspect the relay, however before I start to pull stuff to pieces my question is, has any one else had this happen and what did you find as a fix?

The car is low mileage and in great shape.

Any help and advice will be very gratefully recieved.

Anybody on this forum in the Kingston, Ontario area?

It might be the switch in the stalk causing it. My W124 had the same problem and cleaning the switch cured it. Access to the switch was by taking the end cover off the stalk, not sure if that's possible on a W123 but I suspect they're not too dissimilar.

Dirt in the switch stak could be your cause, the combination relay (controls all the timed stuff) is electronic and needs very little current from the switch. Wet inside the fuse box or relay box could also cause trouble but this would probably mean the flashers, wash wipe, and put yer belt on lamp would all play at silly beggars.

There are several posts about cleaning up the switch, its a steering wheel off job if you wish to remove it though.

Many thanks guys, looks like this weekend I will start by taking the switch assembly to pieces and giving everything a good clean. I will let you know what I find out
