On the diesel w124 fuel will just run from the tank unhindered if any fuel pipes are disconnected on engine , even injector leak off pipes will let fuel out from tank.
The w124 diesel tank can have the fuel lines swapped over under bonnet ( fuel to engine and return line) as they both exit the tank near each other … fuel out from tank strainer that sits under a plastic bell shaped affair and the return line also feeds back into this and this keeps fuel warm and in a constant loop.

Fuel may not flow readily from the w124 petrol tank ?? , never owned a petrol version so not sure, also the diesel returns to the tank at least nearly a litre a minute of diesel at tick over .
As long as the stop lever on the injection pump is in up position then engine will run.. it will run without vacuum connected but you will need to press lever down to stop engine.
Also if the stop lever has an oil leak then the o ring from fuel filter top bolt is the correct size to use to replace it.
Thanks doug1234 didn't get back near it yet might have a go this eve . As a rule are they hard to bleed up ?its not to cold so would the lack of heater plugs be an issue?

You have to crank to bleed lines to injectors but for the fuel system use a vacuum engine oil extractor connected to the return line from engine and apply suction and it will draw fuel through the system…or use one of those hand primer bulbs but remove it once engine running as the return flow is quite an amount.
Access the return line at the bulkhead where under car steel line joins the rubber hose… fit a longer bit of hose and block it off with a bolt to cap the steel return line off or the tanks contents will happily pour out.. you can use a longer hose and hang it up in the air it just needs to be higher than the fuel tank level to stop it coming out.
Lots of ways to get the fuel through and another is some garden hose in the filler cap wrapped in rag so it seals against filler neck and blow down it , return line again needs to be off for this to work.
Obviously having the car nose down with the back end higher than the front will help and if high enough it will nearly sort itself out and again though return line must be off for fuel to come through.
Lack of heater plugs definitely an issue , doubt it will fire at all without them , visions of a yard full of grey smoke comes to mind.
