Hi, I have a 190 diesel automatic that I want to keep for as long as possible, but it has just started making a noise that is really worrying me. When shifting out of park and through neutral there is a 'snicking' noise like metal on metal. Are there any particular known problems with this box? Am I worrying for nothing?

Someone has mentioned to me that it may be a clogged filter causing the pump to work harder. Could this be possible? and if so how do I go about changing the filter

Thanks for your help.

It may help people if you could clarify the type of noise a little better (snicking) doesent quite pinpoint the noise too well, thanks.;)

Change the fluid and filter before you start worrying too much, nice and easy to do.

This is for a different model (with a different box!) but the procedure is exactly the same. http://www.forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=25566

That was a very good example of how to DIY a transmission oil change and congratulations on this. However id like to add a couple of comments. Some torque convertory dont have drain plugs, so dont be worried if you cant find the drain plug. An important message in this was the oil pan bolts and tightening them. Some Benz have a system that stops you from overtightening the bolts and some dont. If it does not have the bolt brackets then be carefull not to overtighten the bolts as damage to the gasket will result. I believe the torque setting for these bolts is 10nm.

I think the TC drain plug was removed around 1999/2000, so a 190 will definately have one. Mine did!

Good point about the sump bolts, they don't need to be very tight at all, I think even 10nm is too much! (8nm seems to ring a bell)

You may be correct on this, its been many years since i had to work on one without the spacers. They are specificly designed to stop overtightening the bolts because Benz know the problems created without them.
