1990 190e shifting hard from 1st to 2nd

Took a 1990 190e [150K] out for a test drive the other day.
Shifted very smoothly through the gears.

My 1990 190e [228K] shifts sometimes VERY hard from 1st to 2nd
at times laying a rubber chirp. Seems like it isn't going to shift at
all and then boom, it does.

I was considering changing it out for a rebuild next year.

Is there anything else that could cause hard shifting?
This car had been always been serviced by the dealer
before I bought it.

This is nearly always where the vacuum pipes have come off the box or they are leaking
