When i apply the brakes on my 190E and just when the car is almost stationary (ie not when it is starting to slow down), the car starts to make loud screeching noises. I changed the brake pads and the noise remains? This does not happen all the time but a general rule of thumb might be that it occurs when braking at low speeds (eg, in traffic jams).

Can anyone enlighten me on the cause of this? Could it be that I need to 'wear' the new brake pads out before the noise will go away altogether?

Hi Luke

I would think that your vehicle is has ABS fitted. If this is the case. Then its the ABS operating outside of its range. Could be one or all three giving a problem. Usually its the front two. But get checked out. If not in servere cases it will stop the vehicle from stoping all together.

I would check your discs, if they are worn to, near or beyond the minimun thickness they will resonate and cause the screeching.

It way be that the pads need bedding in more, if they were cheap pads they may have glazed, try removing them and roughing up the surface with coarse sand paper.

You could try a bit of gentle left foot braking to bed the pads into the discs. I would say that it is your discs causing the problem though.

It´s a big difference in pads though, I had some cheap ones previously fitted on my 380SE, and they was hard as stone. I roughed them up with some sand paper, but nothing happened, they just schreeched and did not brake well. I bought some Lucas brake pads to both sides (they weren´t much more expensive than some similar unknown-brand), and it was like new brakes...
