can you please help. i need to renew my whining rear diff. it has done 140k miles. the merc garage gave me a part number.
129 350 0914 that was painfully expensive. i then phoned a salvage yard who said that there may be a LSD with these things and also different ratios. any guidance please

I do not know where you are based, but it is much better to get it rebuilt by a diff specialist.

If you do a search on the forum we have one chap who is having his done just a few weeks back.

it is a specialist job and not that expensive, if you get a secondhand one that could be noisy---- and all that work again ??

try these people, 01206 386303, they reconditioned my diff on my CL500 recently, £510 all in but that was just the bearings, not the crown wheel and pinion, add another £250 if you need them.
You wont find a diff for a CL, S or SL anywhere, I have a 1993 S500 Diff here which I cant sell.
I removed my diff my self and gave the diff to a local specialist and he collected the diff from there, I think they are based in essex.
Make sure it is your diff thats the problem and not your center prop bearing !!!! both fail and give the same noise.

If it is the pinion bearing it will whine or hum when pulling, if you take your foot off the throtle and it stops whining, that would confirm it.

but if the center prop bearing is failing then the diagnosis is the same as the diff, under load the diff and center bearing can whine, when you lift off the power the noise goes.
To check my diff I removed the oil from it and replaced the oil with a higher viscosity this reduced the diff whine.
