I have a 1991 Mercedes 190 E Automatic 2.6 liter. Car just stopped running while driving in Jan 11'.Mileage 211,XXX. No salvage title.Needs new parts in engine (piston and rod). Drivers side front window and rear passenger side windows don't roll down (electrical problem) which also effected the upgraded stereo. A/C recently converted to modern freon. New registration good until Feb 2012. This was a great car, well maintained and routine oil changes.I do not know how to find the parts and do not even know if it is worth fixing. I have tried listing it for sale for $1000obo. Should i try and sell it for parts, scrap it, or fix it?

Well, it looks very much worth saving to me. If you could obtain a replacement engine I think that would possibly be the way to go. I guess the electrical glitches could be fixed rather more easily. Good luck with it. It looks a super car.

It is a pity this has happened, but what a superb motor car.

Given that you will get very little for a 20 year old non runner, regardless of condition, where else would you find such a nice car today for the price of replacing or reconditioning the engine of yours?

The 190E 2.3 8valve was never imported into the UK. By all accounts, it should have been as it's a good one. Almost as economical as the 2.0 but more power and better torque. If the rest of the car is good, then it's well worth sourcing a replacement 2.3 litre M102 engine and fitting it - there shouldn't be a lot of difficulty finding one as it was fitted to the W124 230E.

As it stands, it's worth next to nothing if it has an engine problem, so sort that and the few electrical gremlins and it should last for years.

W 202 and W204 and now a W212
I have a Japanese import 190 E and it is a 2.3, like you said it has more torque than the 2.0 and does pull away from the lights abit sharpish. Lovely motor.

I think he said its a 2.6? And if so why not relpace the motor with a 3 litre 103 engine, plenty about.

The poster needs to be accurate about which engine he has --a 2.3 4 cylinder or a 2.6 cylinder 6 cylinder. Depending on the extent of engine damage a rebuild might be possible but his best/cheapest bet is probably a second hand engine from a breaker. Personally I would always prefer one that could be heard running / or with verifiable mileage but that's not always possible.

Well we're both right! He does say in his post it's a 2.6 (which I confess I missed), but the thread topic states 2.3, so now I'm as confused as he is!
