I have a 1992 300SL and the hard top will not unlock.

I've read through the forums and soem of the responses are a bit baffling, but I've tried:

- Reseting the windows
- Checking fuses in boot and engine bay
- Shouting at it

None of these worked so i took it to a local dealer who said the power unit under the rear seat had gone. They say this will cost almost £2k!!

Any suggestions?

(also the roll bar wont move and the red light flashes when i press the roof control)

Thanks for your time guys!

well the dealer is probably right , best course of action is to hunt the specialist scrap yards and source a second hand power unit in my opinion.

Fix old ECU's

I thought i had a similar problem but ended up being an issue with the sensors.

Anyhow when i was looking for a replacement i found a company that would fix my old Hood ECU and and give it a 12 month warrenty for £250.

Have a search around google.

p.s,,,, have you tried to manually remove it using the tool.

This often resets the sensors. It worked for mine.

Hi Anne,

My control unit has gone as well and the symptoms are exactly the same, I contacted my Merc dealer and was quoted £850 for a new one and they are a doodle to fit!

I changed mine

£850 yup but make sure it is the problem as they are non returnable and can make an expensive paperweight :(

It is best to use the hand tool first to unlock it the instructions are with the handbook.

The ECU does go wrong unfortunately - BBA will do it and guarantee it for less than a new one.

As already suggested try removing the hard-top manually - this video might help:
