Not sure exactly which model it is but mine is a 1992... I'm sure some of you experts will know what that makes it? If so feel free to add to the thread for others!
My mechanic tells me that the timing belt has jumped and caused the engine to seize... Furthermore, due to the age of the car, the bolts holding the top of the engine are also seized and he is very reluctant to further investigate.

As I'm not mechanically minded, I'm not too sure what this means but bottom line is that he has advised me to get a new engine as it would be more cost effective to replace the block than starting to fiddle around and potentially find more problems.

If anyone can help with advice or sourcing a replacement engine I would be very greatful. The alternative is to break the car for parts but it is in very good condition all round and does feel a bit extreme... Not to mention it would break my heart!

    Thanks for your help,

    Jacques

Consider a finding a new mechanic, rather than a new engine.

These have chains not belts, and the rocker covers are really easy to get off.

As per above your mechanic is feeding you a line about the timing belt. I would therefore question his motivation and I'd look for another mechanic with experience of Mercedes.

Thank you all for your advice, I think I might try and get a second opinion before anything else... Anyone can advise of a good mechanic in Sheffield? The only place I know of is Europa near the station but they are not the cheapest!

    All the best, Jacques.

i have a complete engine if you need it, without the throttle body, but looking at your posting i agree with everyone else, get a new mechanic [second opinion]
